Pirates! The Penzance Musical, the Gilbert & Sullivan musical reimagined by Rupert Holmes in a New Orleans jazz-infused type, has been given a four-week Broadway extension “on account of common demand,” in keeping with Roundabout Theater Firm.
Pirates! begins previews on Friday, April 4, with an official opening on Thursday, April 24. The restricted engagement will now shut July 27 on the Todd Haimes Theatre, 4 weeks after the unique June 22 deliberate shut.
Choreographed by Warren Caryle and directed by Scott Ellis, the Broadway solid is led by Ramin Karimloo (Pirate King), Jinkx Monsoon (Ruth), David Hyde Pierce (Gilbert/Main Common Stanley), Nicholas Barasch (Frederic), Preston Truman Boyd (Sullivan/Police Sergeant) and Samantha Williams (Mabel Stanley). The synopsis: Gilbert & Sullivan’s pirate ship docks in New Orleans on this jazzy-bluesy imaginative and prescient of the crowd-pleasing traditional, in an outrageously intelligent romp scorching with Caribbean rhythms and French Quarter aptitude. With the tongue-twisting Main-Common, the rabble-rousing Pirate King, newly-imagined younger lovers, daring daughters, footloose pirates and fleet-footed police, there’s a shipload of musical comedy delights on board to dazzle first-timers and G&S aficionados alike.
