BAFTA nominee Danielle Deadwyler (Until) is teaming with Alix Madigan and Michael Sherman to develop and produce The Avenue, a function adaptation of the novel by Ann Petry, by which she’s set to star.
Additionally aboard the undertaking is Gina Atwater, who will write the script and function government producer.
Reissued in 2022, Petry’s 1946 debut novel was famously the primary e-book by a Black lady to promote over a million copies. That is the harrowing story of younger Black lady Lutie Johnson (Deadwyler) and her spirited wrestle to lift her son amid the violence, poverty, and racial dissonance of Harlem within the late Forties.
In an announcement accompanying the event announcement, Deadwyler mentioned, “Ann Petry’s The Avenue has quaked my understanding of motherhood, Black and American household life experiences on the right way to simply get by (traditionally), and the festering feelings that seed alongside the wilted optimism and darkish hope of the American Dream.”
She known as The Avenue “important to American literature,” saying that this was “evident upon its marvelous critically acclaimed debut; and, now, with this steadfast and dynamic collaboration with Alix, Michael, Gina, myself and the Petry property, we hope to rumble the movie panorama with an adaptation of her evergreen story of the lengths to which one mom, one lady is stretched for self, household and the prices of survival.”
